Data Security Update
Radiant is committing significant resources and efforts to helping our customers secure consumer data.

PCI-DSS Compliance. This is a topic that seems to be in the news everywhere these days. Whether it is a story about a merchant getting breached by criminals and losing their business or the multiple letters you're receiving from your processor, service providers, or other vendors trying to sell you something, you can't get away from it. But what does it mean to you?

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, commonly known as the PCI DSS, was created with the sole purpose of securing and protecting cardholder data. Card brands have mandated that acquiring banks are responsible for ensuring that all of their merchants that store, process or transmit payment cardholder data comply with the PCI-DSS requirements. Demonstrating PCI compliance goes well beyond simply having a PA-DSS validated payment processing application. Retail merchants are directly responsible for ensuring that they meet ALL requirements of the PCI DSS standard and reporting their compliance status.

As many of you heard at CONNECT in February, Radiant is committing significant resources and efforts to helping our customers secure consumer data. We want to help you understand your responsibility related to data security and your liability per the PCI-DSS and card brand mandates. We will be helping to promote your awareness of data security by providing ongoing communication in the following areas on which you can focus to enhance the security of your business:

  1. Implementing secure remote access practices
  2. Implementing adequate password controls
  3. Regularly performing procedures to securely remove any sensitive data no longer needed and securely delete any unallocated space
  4.  Installing a hardware firewall
  5. Installing anti-malware programs
  6. Ensuring you are using a compliant version of CounterPoint and it is configured securely per implementation guide
  7. Ensuring your operating system is up to date with security patches
  8. Proving compliance at specific points in time (SAQ/network scans)
  9. Implementing operational security processes
  10. Consistently monitoring your security infrastructure and procedures
It is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that your site is PCI-DSS compliant. More

ASK ANDEE

CounterPoint SQL

Dear Andee -

I manage a museum gift shop where we run CounterPoint. I send my boss a specific report at the end of every week, and I have to say, it's really a pain to retype all the criteria every week. I'm hoping you might have a suggestion to help.

Signed,
Tired of Typing

Dear Tired -

Never fear! Saving Parameters is here! After typing in the parameters the next time you run the report, choose the Options box at the bottom of the screen and give the report a name you'll remember. Next time you want to run that report, simply open the report, choose the Options box and load parameters, and select that report name. All the parameters will be filled out and you'll be ready to run the report!

Thanks-
Andee

CounterPoint SQL

Dear Andee -

I've been using CounterPoint in my cigar/smoke shop for a few years. I would like to see a lot of item data on one report, but it seems I have to run multiple reports to see everything. Specifically, I want to see a just my Dominican cigars (it's a category), and on one report see item detail including item number and description, min and max, quantity on purchase order(s), last received date, last sold date, and the vendors item number. Am I asking for too much?

Signed,
Sending Smoke Signals

Dear Smoke -

Go to Inventory/View/Item Details. You can right-click in the column row and choose column designer and add all the fields you requested (and more!). In the top part of the screen, you can filter on category. Click the button on the right middle area called "view details" and watch the data populate! This is no smoke screen!

Thanks-
Andee

CounterPoint V7

Dear Andee -

I run a chain of dollar stores, and we've used CounterPoint V7 since 1998. I've been having a problem with my employees being unreliable and I'd like to be able to lock them out of clocking in, or even logging in to ticket entry, but I don't want to delete their user file because I still want to include them on historical reports. In fact, in many cases I end up keeping them as employees (on probation). Any thoughts on how to handle this?
Signed,
Battered Boss

Dear Battered -

In Setup/System/Users, bring up the employee you want to lock out then press F7 and change their status to inactive. Inactive users cannot log in to CounterPoint, perform Point of Sale or Timecard functions, or be designated as the sales rep for a ticket. However, inactive users and sales reps remain on file and can be included on all reports. Furthermore, you can press F7 again to make them active employees again if you decide to keep them or re-hire them.

Thanks-
Andee

Business Tip from Bob Negen
Get Fit and Trim
Consumer confidence is slowly picking up, but months of meager spending by your customers may have left your inventory levels a bit... bloated.

Here are 5 things you can do today to take corrective action and get your stock levels fit and trim.

Cancel Orders
Nobody's favorite, but if you've got merchandise on order that you don't need or can't afford, you should cancel those orders.

Trim Orders
Sometimes it's enough just to trim orders by completely deleting a few items on the PO or by decreasing quantities on all items across the board. Need 20% less merchandise? Trim your orders by 20%.

Adjust Ship Dates
If you've got merchandise on order that you don't need right now, but could use in a couple of months, push back your ship dates. This technique works well for basic best-sellers, but not well on seasonal stuff or fashion merchandise that you either take when the vendor ships - or you don't get it.

Take Markdowns
Markdown the stuff that's clogging up your inventory and turn it into cash! There are lots of ways to make markdowns effective - read my Top Ten Markdown Tips.

Increase Sales
This is probably the best (and most often overlooked) way to lower your inventory levels. Increase your marketing efforts this month - watch your sales go up and your stock levels go down.

Individually, each one of these techniques can help you get your stock levels under control. But if you use, two, or three, or all five at the same time your results will be quick and nearly painless!

It's like trying to lose weight by exercising VS. exercising, and eating less, and eating lower calories foods. The techniques work better and faster in combination.

Also like managing your weight, staying thin in the first place is better than having to shed the pounds later.
